Report by NT

Ok here goes. Track report time........ I'm going to focus on what I think were the personal highlights and leave the reporting of results to the results page.

Sadly we missed last week's TT night due to rain which meant we also missed the opportunity to see the beads of sweat form on the ashen faces of the sprinters as they contemplate over 3000m of individual torture. It also left those of us who were a little more excited for the event staring out our windows at the rain wondering if we had unboxed our aero helmets and shaved our legs for nothing.
It also meant that all of us were doubly thrilled to see a perfect blue sky above round 1 of the 2021/2022 points series and a good turnout of riders.

Proceedings kicked off with a well deserved round of applause for Nicole, Liliya, and Maya who contine to achieve amazing results and raise the bar for themselves, and everyone else.
Then we were into the warm up scratch races. As usual they ran at a pace that suggests everyone has forgotten that it starts with the words "warm up". Seriously, it's right there in the name....
Anyhow, notable mentions go to Glenn Rogers who seems to be finding some solid form this year and put on a big run with 1 lap to go.
Also to Eagle eyed Darren Dillon who noticed a pair of ducks attempting to cross the track and expertly used his bike as some sort of poultry shepherding device to keep them safely out of harms way.
There was some controversy in the A grade scratch race with Crafty pulling out due to a puncture, and Mick Smith also pulling out, apparently in the spirit of good sportsmanship. I don't know how many tech screws, bits of broken glass, and goatshead thorns you people have seen on the track but suffice to say sabotage has not been ruled out at this time.
The ducks, apparently horrified that someone would try to do this to crafty began to leave in disgust, this time helped gradually accross the track by Mel and Gary. Notable mentions for you two as well.

Then it was time for the sprints. The junior development riders as usual left everything on the track for their individual timed lap, doing everything in their power to earn a Maccas stop on the way home.
Then onto the 3 up sprints. Notable mentions here to Mel Turner with a bold early run that took the other 2 by surprise, and the youthful Calab Abbott taking experienced hands Hugh Gray and Guy Page by surprise to win his sprint.
My personal highlight though was the look of delight on the face of Adam Kimberly at the prospect of writing the A grade handicaps.
Apparently the 4 up sprint I was riding in was somewhat of a highlight, with riders 4 wide at the finish. From my point of view I was more concerned with the searing sensation in my legs and the rapidly increasing blurry vision. But if it was entertaining then I guess it was well worth it.

Then onwards to the endurance scratch race. I must admit to having thoroughly buried myself in the races so far to the point that by this stage my already limited photography skills were starting to slide significantly and I had more or less stopped paying attention.

There were some interesting interviews with the star sprinters however, with Jaydan Stanton Kerr giving us some insights on leg envy and Crafty providing some wisdom to the younger attendees on the ancient craft of whittling.
The night ended with the crowd favorite italian before we put an end to another fantastic night of racing.

CCCC Track Season Week 2
By Mark Iveson

As week 2 arrived (or perhaps it’s week 3, I don’t know I can barely remember what I had for breakfast let along which CCCC week it is) most riders spent the morning and afternoon checking out the Bureau of Meteorology website looking at the radar hoping that the rain would stay away and that inevitable post on the Book of Faces would advise that the nights track racing was cancelled. A mere 30% change of rain at 6pm, however the radar told a different story with the threat of various degrees of rain looking like the night could be called off.

As is typical with most track nights, the crowd started to gather on the grass area inside the track and no sooner had everyone settled into their seats with hot chocolates and popcorn ready to watch the nights events unfold, the heavens started to open slowly and the odd splatter of rain turned into a light drizzle.
The drizzle continued through the official warm up and in scenes similar to a Tatarinoff expulsion of air, the crowd quickly dispersed to shady fresher pastures. The riders waited patiently for the rain to clear playing family classics such as I Spy and Guess Who before the riders went back on the track for another warmup lap which seemed to result in further downpours.

The officials spent plenty of time deliberating about whether to cancel the event and feel the wrath of the angry crowd who were growing restless or play the waiting game for the track to dry out so that proceedings could begin.
The resident MC for the night was the a-typical Crafty (or as some would say Shafty) who kept the crowd entertained with his witty humour and interviews. His lack of ability to remember or correctly pronounce the name of riders is a constant feature and the crowd roared in delight as he announced the arrival of “The Borg” who strangely had been missing the previous week due to a serious paper cut.

With the strange conditions it became clear that the track agenda would have to be radically changed and sans warm up the first event for the night was the 7-lap individual pursuit. Protests and complaints were heard from the crowd yet Crafty told everyone to suck it up and get on with.

The juniors kicked off with a 3-lap pursuit and as ever it’s always a pleasure to watch the youth trying their hardest and setting some impressive times. As the different grades proceeded to undertake the individual pursuit, a common theme emerged with most riders feeling fantastic, fast and energised on the first lap, which then by the end of lap two turned into a feeling of horror, pain, fear and disgust knowing that another five laps had to be completed before this torture session would be over.

As the event progressed through the grades the lap times got faster and faster, but controversy wasn’t far away with MT (Mark) and The Borg (Brad) competing in the same heat with the “The Borg” or “The Machine” easily overtaking MT on what felt like Lap 1 but was probably Lap 5. Crafty was screaming down the microphone for MT to pull back and get out of the draft however MT could only hear the sounds of what he thought was “the wife” which merely meant that MT was disqualified and an Office Works stationery order for more red pens as the timing sheets were littered with red ink spelling “DQ”.

The pursuit had some great battles in particular Little Pretzel and Matt trading blows for close to 3 laps where the lead changed more often than a contestant on Love Island deciding who to couple up with. Needless to say, there was a sprint to the finish that resulted in Matt registering a win (or was it Little Pretzel).

The quote of the night belonged to “Maya” who during the pursuit verbalised her disgust at this <insert choice words> horrible event. Darren bore the brunt of the abuse, however this turned out to be nothing compared to the internal battle that Jayden was having trying to get motivated to turn the pedals however this quickly diverged into a battle to ensure the two ducks who had ventured onto the track didn’t turn into the special “duck suey” dish at the local Chinese. The test of nerve and balance by both riders ensured that the ducks lived to see another day but only just.

With the individual pursuit over and done it was time for another individual pursuit consisting of three laps. Most riders were already spent and weren’t looking forward to another torture session and the number of participants in the 2nd race was significantly less with many deciding to save themselves for the last race of the night or go home to do something less demanding like watching paint dry or watching an episode of The Nanny.

The individual pursuit proved to be very exciting with some terrific times posted and more pain and suffering for the participants. There were rumblings amongst the riders to call an extraordinary general meeting to replace the track co-ordinator with another resource who could perhaps remove the individual pursuit as an event and replace it with some sort of eating or drinking challenge.

As the night continued the clock was ticking on the amount of time left to complete proceedings and after much deliberation by the committee, they decided on an all-in scratch race for the final event for the night.

The track was packed with riders and a very, very long train developed that felt like it stretched for close to half a lap. The bunch waited in anticipation for 9:20 which triggered the lap counter to be set for 2 laps and it was on for young and old with the young guns turning up the pace at the front and the front bunch slowly sped away for a sprint finish.

Another great night of racing even with the delayed start due to rain and considering the downpour that is happening now we were incredibly lucky to get some racing in. Crafty will be posting the results on another post and I have to say a huge thank you to everyone who volunteered (we can’t race without you) and your efforts are very much appreciated. Another big thank you to the riders who turned up in dubious conditions to give it their all.

A big welcome to Andrew Samways “Amways” as Crafty called him on his first track event.
For those riders who stayed in their warm, dry homes cuddling their teddy bears, you missed a good night of racing, yes it hurt, yes it was painful, did we all get stronger – YES, YES and YES. Do I hate individual pursuits – YES, YES YES!!! Did I mention I hate IP's.

My nomination for next week is: THE MAN, THE MACHINE, THE LEGEND, THE BORG

Our first madison for 2021

  • I have some team jerseys at the track
  • But it always helps if you bring your own  (matchy/matchy)
  • The Madison is undoubtedly the most exciting discipline of track racing and one that should be tried/ learnt
  • @CCCC track, we try and introduce riders smoothly by: pairing new riders with experienced ones and/or handicapping the event to give more space and time to sort things out.
  • Give it a go.

Track reports

  • I have received a few positive emails in regards to the feature track reports
  • From Wally Shelly "I have just finished reading the 2 track reports by Mark & Nick and found them very entertaining reading hope to see more."
  • The initial concept was to alleviate one of the duties from my task list.
  • However, it is growing into much more.
  • Each writer/journalist adds their own perspective on the night which is very refreshing 😎 😎

Week 3 Track report,
Fine weather and a good field of riders made for entertaining and competitive racing.
The juniors set the night alight with a 4 lap handicap race that saw Johnno taking the win
The other 3 riders, Flora, Xavier and Lucy all come together in the straight for
a grandstand finish. Great race.

The warmup scratchies were run and won. In C grade Andrew took out his maiden track race win.

Handicap round - 4 laps the journey. C grade saw Bryson leading across the line with 3 to go
The pack was closing in fast. A group of 4 at the front formed and were chased by Caleb who was trying
to solo across the gap. He made it to form a group of 5 at the bell.
It was Andrew that held on for the win to make it two in a row. Great ride by Caleb.

The B grade race had a strong finish with form riders, Tam, Nick T and Maya taking honours.

A grade started with a bang, Mick took off like he had been shot from a cannon. He veered up and
out of the race early, Jayden left to bridge the gap to the front 4 riders that had formed a group.
Crafty, Adam, Nicole and Lilya did all they could but a fast finishing Jayden took the win.

Some hot time in the 200 m fly were set. This the 2nd points event of the night. See results above for times.

The handicap elimination race was next, two heats of this one. Fast riders and not so fast riders. As indicated by the
200m fly times. The not so fast event was won by Adam K. Elimination specialist Crafty took 2nd.

The fast riders event saw an audacious attack by Caleb at the front of the race 8 laps out. His effort to solo to
victory was foiled by the bunch. 4 riders left, Andrew (C grade) Matt (B grade) Nick T (B grade) and Jayden (A grade).
Nick T used too much gas earlier and faded, Andrew claimed 3rd place and Matt picked up a strong 2nd. Jayden the winner.

The main event of the evening was the Madison. 5 pairings took to the track. After a 10 lap warmup/neutral period the race was on. 15 laps to go. At the bell 4 teams were together. The pairing of Jayden and Maya took the win.

Great racing tonight, highlight riders were Andrew Samway who dominated C grade winning the scratch, the handicap and placing 3rd in the elimination race. Caleb for his inspired attacks and efforts. And the 4 junior riders who were superb.

Teams’ night is always inherently special. The racing has a different dynamic, the tactics are modified, and the team chat/encouragement is noticeable. Something else I always adore about teams Night is that everyone seems to push themselves a little harder.

The night was won by Team White
• Calab Abbot
• Col Eggins
• Darren Dillon
• Glen Rodgers
• Guy Page
• Jaydan Stanton-Keir
• Johno Abbot
• Matthew Drohan
• Maya Dillon
• Nicole Duncan
• Noah Mason
• Sonia Vetisch

Team White took the points lead in the first race (C Grade scratch) and only barley lost it for a brief moment in the second race (B grade Scratch) where team Black drew equal. From the next race to the last, Team White steadily increased their lead to end Round 4 with 62 points to Team Black’s 42.

The 20 point lead, equated to a 20m head-start for the final decider “Italian Pursuit”. On the start line everything looked set when I realised, I had a flat tyre. After rectifying the issue, we were almost ready for a start when a southerly buster hit sending chairs and other lightweight apparel flying. After a short delay to secure the hatches “so to speak” we were off. Boy, did the wind have an impact on the dynamics of the race. Team White rode the wind better and secured the victory for the night.

I was in the Team Black camp. I can honestly say we had a cracker of a night with loads of highlights that we all celebrated. Lucy Abbot’s win in the Junior H’cap and Mel Turner’s 2nd place in the snowball was defiantly worth cheering for. However, the gold star was Mark Tartarinoff’s win in the B Grade Snowball. There is very little doubt in my mind that Mark would have pulled the pin on any other night and I am very confident, he would agree with my initial statement “everyone seems to push themselves a little harder” on Teams Night.

Numbers were a little low this week for the final night of 2021 CCCC Track. We had only 23 riders celebrate our last race at the Track until we return on the 6th of Jan 2022.  My guess for the low numbers is either CCCC folk who have been close contacts/ feeling unwell OR – riders who are concerned (for numerous reasons) of the Omicron outbreak we are in the midst of.  To those people, we say Thank You, for either being compassionate or vigilant.

Tonight, we raced, we ate pizza and some of us drank beer… I ticked all those boxes. A great night of solid racing was had by all. I believe there were three clear standouts/highlights of the night. All occurred in the Round 4 Point’a”Lap.

  1. The C Grade Point’a’Lap. The race descended into what could only be described as a dogfight. In the closing stages, it came down to just two riders Guy Page and Andrew Samway. Whoever won the final lap would get to 3 points and the overall victory. Andrew had cracked Oldman-Page on the bell lap. However, Guy being Guy, never surrounded and surpassed Andrew with less than 100m’s remaining. To Andrew’s credit, he didn’t yield and managed to claw his way back at the chance for the win. In a photo finish, he did it.
  2. The B Grade Point’a’Lap. Steve Cooper initiated an early attack that secured him 3 points he wisely sat back to see how his points held up. By using the term “sat back” I am being literal, he pulled into the infield and took his position on his deck chair. Unfortunately, a raging David Browne secured the final 3 sprints to secure the win.
  3. Adam Kimberly, winning the A grade event after chasing for the initial 3 laps to get back on, biding his time to a moment everyone was stuffed and launching an attack that no rider could respond to.

See Ya, first Wed in Jan 2022
